Research meets technology TYPO3 support for the DZNE

German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)

The DZNE, headquartered in Bonn, is one of the leading research institutions for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and dementia. As part of the Helmholtz Association and one of eight German Centers for Health Research, the DZNE plays a key role in medical progress – and needs a digital presence that grows with it.

Reliable TYPO3 support

Since 2021, we’ve been supporting the DZNE in the ongoing development and optimization of its TYPO3-based web landscape. From technical maintenance and the enhancement of individual components to major version upgrades – including the jump from TYPO3 9 to 11 and now to version 13 – we serve as a reliable, collaborative partner.

Visually strong. Editorially sound.

As part of the homepage relaunch, we created a modern, responsive layout that prioritizes both user-friendliness and the DZNE’s strong visual identity. To ensure content is always up-to-date and accurately communicated, we provide regular TYPO3 training for the DZNE editorial team. These practical sessions are tailored to the team’s daily workflow, helping them create and publish content efficiently.

API-based media solution for greater visibility

A key highlight of our collaboration was integrating the easydb media database via API into the DZNE’s main website. The goal was to provide the press and public with high-quality, freely accessible image content – much like platforms such as Unsplash. The implementation was done through a custom TYPO3 extension, enabling journalists, partners, and the general public to easily and intuitively access approved DZNE images – a crucial element of the DZNE’s communication strategy.

Interactive SVGs for visualizing scientific structures

Making science clear and visually engaging is one of the DZNE’s strengths. In this context, we implemented interactive SVG graphics, like those used to showcase research areas on the website. Users can easily explore different locations and fields of expertise, gaining direct insights into key research topics.

Making communication reliable

For the DZNE, we rely on proven TYPO3 solutions from our portfolio:

  • The TYPO3 Content Publisher ensures a clear separation between the editorial and live systems. Only approved content gets published, which improves quality control, reduces risks, and boosts system performance.
  • With LUXletter, the DZNE sends newsletters directly from the TYPO3 backend – an ideal way to communicate research findings effectively.
  • In case of emergencies, a simplified emergency website has been set up, running independently from the CMS. It ensures digital accessibility even during technical issues and provides key information, such as contact details or updates on the situation.

DZNE Foundation: Next project ready to launch

We’re currently collaborating with the DZNE on a redesign of the DZNE Foundation’s website. At the same time, we’re developing a web app for address management, enabling the foundation to manage contacts centrally, efficiently, and in compliance with data protection regulations – another step toward digital sovereignty and process optimization.
