optimizing design and usability Accessible websites

Accessible web development

Making our websites accessible to everyone. We pursue this goal, with its challenges, in all our projects. We rely on technical solutions to ensure better accessibility and at the same time meet legal requirements such as the BITV and the international WCAG guidelines.

In collaboration with our clients, we analyze existing barriers and focus on accessible web development as an integral part of usability. Good design enables an inclusive user experience and combines proven standards with optimal accessibility for people with disabilities.

In our teams, specialists for conception, web development and design work hand in hand to cover all aspects of an accessible website.

Is your website accessible?

Accessible websites are not just lip service for public sector organizations. Legal regulations require testing and compliance with established standards such as WCAG for various digital offerings such as websites. We help with the classification and evaluation of the tests and also perform them. Benefit from our experience with BITV tests.

Consistently implementing the principles of WCAG 2.1

An accessible website according to BITV fulfills the WCAG principles: perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. This means clear structures, alternative content, simple navigation and compatibility with assistive technologies. We ensure that your website is accessible to everyone - regardless of limitations or devices.

Improve perceptibility

Perceivability is a central aspect of accessibility: visual content should also be audible and vice versa, colors should not be the only source of information. In practical terms, this means alternative texts for images, adaptable text sizes, sufficient contrast, subtitles for videos and flexible timing for media.

Optimize usability

Usability (UI/UX for short) is not only essential for accessible websites. All functions should be intuitively accessible via the keyboard, content must remain usable without time pressure, and visual effects must not trigger seizures. It also needs clear navigation and support for different input methods.

Consider comprehensibility

Clear wording, consistent structure and alternative forms of presentation make it easier for everyone to use and improve accessibility. Simple wording, consistent design, well-structured content and clear labeling are important. Adjustable font sizes and contrasts as well as comprehensible forms ensure better usability for all users.

Accessibility analysis & concept

We conduct a detailed review of your existing TYPO3 website for conformity with WCAG/BITV. This includes technical and editorial aspects. Based on the results, we develop a specific concept and strategy to effectively eliminate all identified barriers and achieve your goals.

Technical and Content Adaptation

Following concept approval, technical adjustments are made in TYPO3: optimization of templates, use of accessible extensions, and code corrections. Simultaneously, we support you in creating or revising your content to make it accessible and integrate it into the system.

Testing, Review, and Quality Assurance

The implemented measures undergo comprehensive testing. We perform automated and manual checks, including tests with screen readers. This ensures your TYPO3 website meets the required standards and is truly accessible to all users.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about accessibility and TYPO3

Is TYPO3 accessible out-of-the-box?

TYPO3 offers a very good technical basis for accessibility, but is not automatically 100% accessible “out-of-the-box”. Actual accessibility depends heavily on the quality of the codebase used, the extensions used and, above all, the correct content creation by the editors.

Is accessibility mandatory for websites?

Yes, for many it is. For public bodies at federal, state and municipal level in particular, digital accessibility is made mandatory by laws such as BITV 2.1 (based on WCAG). It is also becoming increasingly important for many companies, both legally and socially. For example, through the Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSG), which came into force on June 28.

Why should a website be accessible?

Accessibility is not just a legal requirement for many. It significantly expands your target group, as people with disabilities, older users or people with technical limitations can use your content. It also improves general usability for all visitors and strengthens the positive image of your brand.

How can I test whether my website is accessible?

There are various methods: Automated tools can provide initial indications, but do not cover all criteria. Reliable results are provided by manual tests in accordance with WCAG/BITV and tests with assis.
