The Challenge
Publishing class cancellations places particular organisational and infrastructural demands on web applications. The usage profile is extremely asymmetric: for much of the year, the platform runs quietly in normal operation. But when official severe weather warnings are issued, or when school closures are decided at short notice early in the morning, traffic rises exponentially within minutes. Tens of thousands of parents, pupils and members of the media access the site simultaneously to find out before school starts whether lessons will go ahead as usual.
In this critical window, the web application must not buckle under any circumstances. At the same time, the administration interface for school authorities and the ministry must be so intuitive and error-resistant that cancellation notices for individual districts, school types or entire administrative regions can be published and corrected in seconds, even under intense time pressure.
