Since 2024, we have been supporting the Helmholtz Zentrum München as a partner in all matters related to the development, maintenance, and optimization of its TYPO3 web landscape. The research center develops solutions for a healthier future and, through its cutting-edge research, lays the foundation for medical innovation. From the very beginning, our goal has been to make this scientific excellence visible digitally at the highest level.

First step: mastering editorial processes

The project began with taking over first-level support for a large and diverse editorial team. The challenge: multiple TYPO3 instances with different technological foundations and highly varied editorial processes. Our task was to stabilize the structures, establish consistent support processes, and at the same time create the foundation for sustainable further development. Through efficient workflows and a solid knowledge base, we were able to provide rapid support to the editorial team while laying the groundwork for the next project phase.

Technical consolidation and migration

In the second project phase, we migrated the platforms to TYPO3 version 13 and created a unified, modern technical foundation. The goal was to significantly simplify maintenance and reduce operating costs—particularly by decommissioning two of the three existing servers. At the same time, the platform was elevated to a new level in terms of performance, accessibility, and SEO.

Measurable results and visible improvements

The results of these measures are impressive: loading times were reduced from an average of 5.7 seconds to under 400 milliseconds—equivalent to roughly a 14-fold performance increase. The Speed Index now stands at 1.4 seconds, and the Google Core Web Vitals are successfully met. Accessibility has also been significantly improved: the websites score 96 out of 100 points in the Google test, and even 100 out of 100 points in high-contrast mode, while the WAVE Accessibility Test reports no errors. This enables the platform to achieve the technical WCAG level AA to AAA. The TYPO3 architecture has been consistently aligned with best practices and achieves the maximum score in the Google test for coding techniques.

The result: a future-proof, high-performance platform

The TYPO3 web landscape of the Helmholtz Zentrum München is now not only faster and technically cleaner, but also easier to maintain, sustainable, and tailored to the needs of the editorial team. At the same time, users benefit from an accessible, intuitive, and high-performance website that significantly enhances the digital visibility of the center’s cutting-edge research.

With this project, we have laid the foundations for the Helmholtz Zentrum München to showcase its scientific work online in the best possible way—efficiently, sustainably, and at the highest technical level.
