Helmholtz Zentrum München TYPO3 Support for Cutting-Edge Research

Helmholtz Zentrum München

Since 2024, we have been supporting the Helmholtz Zentrum München as a partner in all matters related to the development, maintenance, and optimization of its TYPO3 web landscape. The research center develops solutions for a healthier future and, through its cutting-edge research, lays the foundation for medical innovation. From the very beginning, our goal has been to make this scientific excellence visible digitally at the highest level.

First Step: Mastering Stabilization and Editorial Processes

Our entry began with taking over first-level support for a large and heterogeneous editorial landscape. The challenge was to stabilize multiple TYPO3 instances, which differed significantly in their technological setup and editorial processes. By establishing standardized processes and creating a solid knowledge base, we were able to relieve the editorial team while simultaneously laying the foundation for the future-oriented development of the entire web landscape.

Technical Consolidation on TYPO3 13 LTS

In 2025, we laid the foundation for a modern infrastructure through a comprehensive upgrade to TYPO3 13 LTS. The goal was radical simplification: migrating all relevant websites from two fragmented servers to a single, central instance to streamline maintenance and sustainably reduce operating costs. During an intensive project period, our 13-member team successfully executed six Go-Lives:

This achievement involved massive development effort: with 3,045 commits, over 88,417 lines of PHP code, and the handling of 1,279 tickets, we established a clean, maintainable code standard directly at the TYPO3 core.

In the second phase of the project, we migrated the platforms to TYPO3 version 13 and created a unified, modern technical foundation. The aim was to significantly simplify maintenance and reduce operating costs—particularly by decommissioning two of the three previous servers. At the same time, the platform was elevated to a new level in terms of performance, accessibility, and SEO.

Measurable Success in Performance and Accessibility

The technological realignment delivered immediately measurable results. By optimizing the Core Web Vitals and establishing a professional, four-stage CI/CD pipeline (Development, Preview, Release, Production), we were able to reduce average loading times to under 400 ms. In Google PageSpeed tests, the new platform consistently achieves top scores of 100/100 in both SEO and Best Practices. A particular focus was also placed on accessibility: through WCAG compliance (Level AA to AAA) and 100/100 points in high-contrast mode, the sites meet the highest inclusion standards.

Editorial Productivity and Avoidance of Technical Debt

A critical success factor was transforming the backend into a true professional workspace. We fundamentally optimized the user experience (UX) by eliminating unnecessary complexity: the number of input fields was reduced from over 60 to around 10 relevant options. Thanks to a real-time backend preview and an intuitive, color-coded content system, editors can now create content faster and with fewer errors.

At the same time, we systematically reduced “editorial debt.” Instead of forcing editors to rely on error-prone HTML workarounds, the system now provides tailored, structured content elements for every requirement. This not only ensures consistent design but also significantly lowers long-term support costs. Overall, these measures enabled Helmholtz Munich to reduce annual maintenance costs by more than 50% (> €100,000)

Outlook: Scalability as the Standard

The new platform is not a static end product but a scalable ecosystem. Thanks to central standards and individual branding options for each site, the system is already prepared to accommodate up to 30 additional project websites. The goal for 2026 is the complete server consolidation of all remaining instances onto this new high-performance standard.
